From Bratwurst to Bauhaus: Exploring the Unique Charm of Dresden

As I reflect on my journey from my beloved hometown to the picturesque city of Dresden in Germany, I can't help but marvel at the transformative impact it has had on my life, especially as a designer. Moving here after tying the knot opened up a world of possibilities that I could have only dreamed of.

Creating a Revival of Design

Dresden, with its rich history steeped in artistic grandeur and unparalleled architecture, presented me with a canvas of inspiration. The influence of the Bauhaus movement, a cornerstone of modern design principles, was palpable at every turn. The country itself seemed like a living, breathing testament to the Bauhaus way of thought-provoking design.

The city's beauty and charm inspire me to sketch, paint, sit by the river and work, and go on photography tours. It has provided a purpose for my creative expression.

In Dresden, design choices extend beyond architecture and furnishings, influencing all facets of everyday life. Whether it's the delicate features of a button or the thoughtfully crafted design of a door handle, every element reflects a seamless integration of practicality and beauty. This city has the ability to turn the ordinary into something artistic.

A Symphony of Urban Planning

One of the most fascinating aspects of Dresden is its urban planning, which felt like a well-choreographed dance between the old and the new. The city's layout is a testament to thoughtful design, seamlessly integrating heritage structures with modern elements. The juxtaposition of old and new creates a visual feast for the eyes, sparking creativity at every corner.

Every stroll through the streets of Dresden felt like an exploration of a design museum, with the cityscape telling stories of past era while also appealing to contemporary preferences.

Savoring the European Way of Slow Living

Embracing life in Germany also introduced me to the concept of European slow living, a calming antidote to the fast-paced world I was accustomed to. The art of savoring moments, relishing good company, and appreciating nature's beauty became second nature to me. The European way of life encourages us to pause, breathe, and truly immerse ourselves in the present moment.

Living close to nature in Dresden has been a rejuvenating experience, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Whether it's a leisurely bike ride along the Elbe River or a tranquil picnic in the expansive parks, each moment spent outdoors feels like a reconnection with the natural world.

Cultural Assimilation and Quirky Traditions

The cultural norms in Germany have become an integral part of my identity and that of my husband. Simple gestures like making eye contact while clinking our beer steins in a cheerful "Prost!" have woven themselves into the fabric of our daily lives. These seemingly small quirks, which once felt foreign, now form the tapestry of our shared experiences.

As we imagine our future aging side by side, the idea of bringing these cultural subtleties along with us to a new part of the globe fills us with warmth. Dresden has been more than just a city where we resided; it has become a location that has shaped a lifestyle we deeply value and will continue to treasure in the years ahead.

So here's to relishing the European slow living ethos, and celebrating the little quirks that make life in Dresden a unique and unforgettable chapter in our story.
